Why your engagement rate doesn't match your analytics tool

Engagement rate can be calculated per follower, per view or per impression. They're all valid — just don't mix them in one report.

Two reports for the same brand can show very different engagement rates and both be correct. The difference is almost always the denominator.

Three common definitions

  • Per follower: engagement ÷ followers. Works with public data, good for comparing with competitors
  • Per view: engagement ÷ views. Best for video
  • Per impression: engagement ÷ impressions. Needs private account data, common in tools connected to the account

Pick one and label it

Choose the definition that fits the comparison you're making, write it next to the number, and keep it the same every month. When comparing with competitors, use per-follower or per-view, because impressions aren't public.
