Organic vs boosted: reading TikTok numbers honestly
When most of a brand's videos are promoted, total views stop telling you which content works. Here's how to read them.
It's common for brand accounts to promote most of their TikTok videos. That's fine for reach, but it makes the monthly ranking misleading: the top videos are often simply the ones with the biggest budget.
Split the table first
Before ranking anything, split videos into organic and boosted. Compare organic videos with each other, and boosted videos with each other.
Use ratios, not totals
- Engagement per view shows whether people who saw it cared
- Saves and shares per view are a strong signal of content people want to keep or pass on
- Comments per view highlight posts that start conversations
Watch the organic baseline
Track the average views of organic videos month to month. If it keeps falling while boosted views rise, the account is becoming dependent on spend — worth raising with the client before it becomes a budget problem.
